THE NEEDLE DROP: MASTER MUSIC SUPERVISOR KARL WESTMAN SOLVES THE TRIAD OF DOOM.

Screenshot 2021-06-15 at 08.12.57.png

In this week’s Needle Drop one of the greats of the industry gives a masterclass on how to solve the triad of doom.

KW: Give me a brief with a set of limitations and I'm off and running. I like to use the 'must be and must have' scenario to spark new thinking.

For example, last year a client asked that I find a less costly alternative to a track that was up for renewal. This happens in the advertising world when a spot's use no longer justifies the expense of a top shelf licence.

The brief? Find something good, fast and cost effective. We all know this triad of doom. Pick two, sure. All three? Rarely. The original track was an iconic pop song that helped drive the concept, my approach was to find something recognisable as well.

Given the budget I went with classical. Music in the public domain eliminates one side of the 'all in' equation. After digging deep, I found that Brahms's Hungarian Dance worked a charm. But, I was looking for more – something unique that would heighten the comedic tone of the spot. I dug deeper and came across a version of the dance on YouTube performed on the banjo by Jamie Dupuis, a young jazz guitar virtuoso from Canada. Now that's unique.

I edited the track to the cut, presented it and got a resounding thumbs up. Mission accomplished. This gig had an added benefit. Jamie was nothing less than gobsmacked when I offered him our total budget. It was May of 2020 and the lockdown had his public performances at a stand still. It's not always the big sexy budget gigs with big time exposure that are the most rewarding.

As for the creative aspects? Check out the clip's before and after. Did I crack the good, fast and cost effective challenge? You be the judge.

DIRTY MONDAY FT... ELLA ZWIETNIG

unnamed.jpg

Today's Dirty Monday playlist comes from music supervisor, composer and sound artist Ella Zwietnig - a hand-crafted selection of tracks from the best international artists making music out of her home city, Berlin.

EZ: 'Music wise, Berlin has always been all over the place for me. There are many micro scenes, or not even scenes, just people doing their thing, so as a long time resident it’s hard to identify one specific genre of music. Everything on this playlist (and a lot more!) can happen and happens at the same time. Especially this last year it feels only natural to showcase this eclectic mix, as people have been in their own sphere of sorts. I hope everyone can enjoy this musical trip and find something unexpected. To outsiders, Berlin might seem like only a techno / dance music utopia which it is for sure, yet there is a lot more to it and that’s pretty exciting!’

From Alice Phoebe Lou to Discovery Zone, check out the playlist below.

EVERYONE DESERVES CLEAN WATER

We’re incredibly proud to have recently teamed up with charity: water to help score its latest campaign for The Spring.

785 million people currently live without clean water, that’s nearly 1 in 10 people worldwide. The majority live in isolated rural areas and spend hours every day walking to collect water for their family. When a community gets access to clean water, it can change just about everything. It can improve health, increase access to food, grow local economies, and help kids spend more time in school.

Since Scott Harrison launched charity: water in 2006 the non-profit has worked tirelessly to bring safe drinking water and improved sanitation to a staggering 12.7 million people in developing countries that are most in need. One of the many ways it has helped so many is by sending 100% of public donations straight to the people that need it most.

We couldn’t be more grateful that the Grammy winning composer Lorne Balfe instantly agreed to score the campaign.

As the charity says, 'If you want to change everything, start with one thing.’
