Catching up with Tristan Bechet and his collaboration with Karen O

unnamed-1.jpg

We just caught up with Tristan Bechet aka TRZTN about his collaboration with Karen O, which recently featured on the new Gossip Girl reboot.

Tristan says - "Karen O and I have known each other since our formative years as young art-frazzled NYC rockers. Time and again our paths collide in service of a project where our respective musical strengths, albeit from different dimensions, come together in serendipitous ways. I never know what to expect when we collaborate apart from a feeling in the belly that "it will be dope. Hieroglyphs' cements my album's theme of trans-dimensional, surreal journeys. I sent her a simple sketch which she then recorded her poetic, whimsical lyrics setting the tone for what's to come. Her siren-like wails and dream-like approach added the spatial dimension. I embarked on a phantasmagorical way of production without holding back - sculpting sound, more than composing conventionally. I recorded clangs and industrial drums clattering off one another to create something both dissonant and cinematic. The track disintegrates and falls back together like the push and pull of a rubber band stretching.' Hieroglyphs' resembles an odd Lynchian dream state; bizarre and beautiful. A sonic portrait that warbles away into space dust."

DIRTY MONDAY... FT CATHERINE MARKS

unnamed-1.jpg

Today’s Dirty Monday playlist comes courtesy of Grammy Winning record producer Catherine J. Marks.

Having worked with the likes of The Killers, Wolf Alice, St Vincent, Foals and many more, we're over the moon Catherine has taken the time out of her busy schedule to curate a playlist of 10 of her favourite tracks she's worked on.

Listen to the full playlist and read what the tracks mean to Catherine below.

Catherine says: “Throughout my career I have worked with a lot of artists but predominantly, and inadvertently, guitar bands. I love extrapolating and enhancing the energy, excitement and emotional release of a live performance and hearing it translate through the speakers. Hearing those songs explode on the radio and knowing that we captured a moment that still resonates. I have chosen a few of those kinds of moments for this playlist. Turn by the Wombats; Bed Head by Manchester Orchestra and Doubt It by The Amazons. There is something about the journey of each of these songs that I still love.

But there are also songs that were never meant to explode. Songs that were more sombre and less about the energy and excitement and more about capturing and translating moments that were more tender but equally just as raw. Witnessing such amazing artists so exposed and honest, in such a pure way, are some of my favourite memories in the studio. I have often found these moments much harder to capture as the emotion needs to be louder even though the performance is not. These include Alanis’ Pedestal; Wolf Alice Heavenly Creatures; The Gaping Mouth by Lowertown and Mindless Town by Roman Lewis. Although these songs are lesser known than the “bangers”, I think they are equally as important which is why I have chosen them for this playlist.

I’ve also thrown in a few songs that were just so much fun to work on and were achieved in really unusual circumstances. St Vincent’s Masseduction was mixed after walking off a fifteen hour plane ride, and no sleep, slightly delusional and with extreme jet lag… but is still one of my favourite mixes ever. And Tornado by The Howling Bells and Cupid by The Big Moon are two tracks from two of my favourite sounding albums. Both albums were made in about 10 days. That still blows my mind.”
