Radio LBB: Raife's Reading and Leeds Festival Favourites

IMG-7664.JPG

With the return of the Reading and Leeds festival this weekend, Dirty Soup's Raife Burchell shares his favourite artists from previous years with LBB.

Raife says: I’ve played at and attended music festivals all around the world, and Reading and Leeds is one of my favourites. It’s given me some of my most memorable musical moments, both onstage and off. Undoubtedly the best year I had there was 2002. The Prodigy, The Strokes, and The Foo Fighters were headlining. I played shows at both sites - Friday Leeds, Saturday Reading. My god, I was nervous, but my god, did I have fun up there. It was loud as hell, and the crowd didn’t disappoint. They were fully committed, genuine music lovers. Hardcore to the very core!

The moment that’s stuck with me most, though, was something that happened after I’d played the Saturday show at Reading. I was milling about backstage, behind the main stage. I wanted to see how the big bands operated. Incubus were getting close to the end of their set, and Slipnot were up next. There was a sudden shift in the energy in the backstage area. I turned around and could see a few heavy-duty security guards moving through the crowd - they were pretty much shoulder barging anyone in their way out of their way—even the other bands and their security guards. Then, behind them, I suddenly saw all of the members of Slipnot appear - fully masked and ready to play. They were moving at a decent pace, and they looked really (f*****g) intimidating! Everyone, and I mean everyone, moved out of their way.

They were about 20 feet from me when the lead singer suddenly turned around, stopped and looked directly through the crowd at me. I did one of those comedy double takes, like, “Jesus, is he looking at me?” He then suddenly broke away from the pack and made a b-line through the crowd in my direction. My girlfriend grabbed me and said ‘oh god, what’s happening?”. I didn’t have time to think as it was all happening so quickly. I just stayed still as he marched straight up to me and got directly in my face - he was about an inch from me. His eyes were caked in black eyeliner and I could feel his less than minty fresh breath on my face. I didn’t give an inch. Not because I wanted to front him out. I just didn’t know what else to do? We were face to face for what felt like... FOREVER, but It was probably only a few seconds. Then, in the creepiest Chucky style voice, he said, “have I got a bee on my faaaaaccccce?”. I replied in my most polite nervous English bloke way, “I’m sorry?” “I said, have I got a bee on my faaaaaccccce?” - he calmly asked again. “Erm, no, you don’t” - I replied. He chuckled to himself, turned around and made his way towards the main stage to play the show. I won’t lie, I nearly shat my pants. Have fun listening to my playlist.

Dimension by JAE5 feat. Septa & Rema: The vibe on the Reading stage is super important, and even though this record won't be one that is performed live this weekend, the energy that comes from this Jae5 production literally epitomises the summer feeling that everyone will have at a festival

Mozambique by Ghetts: This track mixes energy and lyrics, again with incredible production, and an absolute legend in the game is Ghetts flexing on a cut from his album which we really saw him have a moment with earlier this year.

Clash by Dave: Tracks like this come along once in a while. Not only is Dave like a superhero rapper in the UK right now, but this track is sure to be performed by the crowd knowing every single word, and I can't wait to press play on it.

Wow by Tion Wayne: Tion Wayne was one of most keenly anticipated performers on the 1Xtra stage last time round, and I'm glad to have him back as his musical consistency has been there for all to see. I was spoilt for choice on which track of his to select - I've gone with Wow as that's the one that I've been banging in my own time lately. It's got a real energy that makes you want to move.

Commitment Issues by Central Cee - Someone who I think we would have seen performing all over the country live over the past year if hadn't had any restrictions is Central Cee. He has a number of bangers that that I could have selected - this is one of the catchiest for me. I can't wait to hear the crowd finish his lines for him.

B1llionz by M1llionz - Something about M1llionz' flow gets me every time I hear him on a record. Someone who I just know if going to be a fans fav.

Spin This Copue by Abra Cadabra - The hype that is going to erupt in the crowd when Abra Cadabra touches the stage is going to be immense. I can feel it already!

What’s Poppin by Jack Harlow - Not many Americans blessing our stage this year but Jack Harlow has made it. The fans will be glad to see him.

My Family by Backroad Gee - Backroad Gee has one of the most unique flows and will be blessing the 1Xtra stage for the first time. This is going to be special.

Woi by Digga D - Digga D's hype came as the pandemic hit, and I feel this would have been one of the biggest tracks of 2019 if it got performed live. This weekend, he will have the chance. Look out for the viral videos of the crowd screaming WOi WOi WOi!

THE RECORD OF THE WEEK: END BY RYUICHI SAKAMOTO

Raife's record of the week is the soundtrack for Beckett, the soon-to-be released Netflix thriller.

Coming out on @milanrecords, the album features the film’s original music composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto. Also featured is the original song Born to Be by Devonté Hynes - which you can check out on the official trailer.

Raife says - "Sakamoto’s spellbinding track End is my highlight from this wonderful release. It’s hard to describe how much I love Sakamoto’s work. I remember when I was about eight or nine and my dad brought the VHS of Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence home. It was one of the first times I ever noticed a film score. I still often listen to that soundtrack. Sakamoto's effect on me at such an early age is undoubtably one of the reasons I chose to dedicate my life to music."

DIRTY MONDAY... FT IAN NEIL

This week's Dirty Monday playlist is from master music supervisor Ian Neil: his all time favourite cover versions he's been a part of.

Ian says - “Being involved in projects where artists create a new song or do a cover of an existing song is one of the buzzes of a music supervisor's work. It brings magic to the screen and I’m lucky to have been around many over the years.”
